Brad Pitt's World War Z Isn't Just 'Mayhem Porn'
Posted: 05/23/2013 12:56 pm

I saw World War Z last night at a small screening at the MoMA. There were a few journalists, some industry types and a pretty large collection of celebrities: Bruce Willis and his wife, Emma Heming; Sting and Trudie Styler; Kevin Bacon; Jemima Kirke; one of the Olsen twins (I can never tell which I'm looking at); Oliver Stone; and Darren Aronofsky, in front of whom I humiliated myself at the post-party by mistaking him for screenwriter Damon Lindelof. ("You owe me one!," he said, laughing, as he walked away. Indeed I do.)

Before seeing the film, I read the Vanity Fair cover story about how the filmmakers scrapped the original ending and created a whole new one, written on very short notice by Lindelof and his friend Drew Goddard and shot with about 20 actors. Once you've read the VF story, you'll be able to see where the shift happens -- it's just over an hour in, when Pitt leaves Jerusalem on a plane. I don't want to spoil the movie, so I'll just say this: instead of getting even bigger, the story gets much smaller. The original ending had Pitt squaring off with zillions of zombies; this one has him facing a more personal, even intellectual challenge. There's action, but it's confined.

I think it works, though I suspect some people who see the movie cold will wonder why its scale contracted instead of expanding. The reason, according to the article, was to keep things focused on the characters.

Brad Pitt introduced the movie and spent a good long time socializing at the party afterward. Earlier in the night, he made a surprise appearance in New Jersey. So clearly, he's invested in the success of World War Z. One journalist I talked to, who didn't like the movie as much as I had, wondered why Pitt had bothered to make it. This person thought Pitt should stick to making films like Moneyball. It's an interesting question. I think Pitt, whose company, Plan B, produced the film, would like to prove that he can create and sustain a bankable franchise. But I also think the themes of the movie appealed to him. He liked the idea of a global action movie. There's also an environmental critique bubbling under the surface of World War Z, even if it starts strong (the opening montage is heavy on global-warming references) and quickly peters away. But maybe the biggest selling point was the emphasis on family. Pitt's character, Gerry Lane, begins the movie as a stay-at-home dad, and the safety of his wife (played by Mireille Enos of The Killing) and two daughters remains his primary concern throughout.

That family focus is one reason World War Z felt like something other than just another serving of apocalyptic mayhem porn (though there's plenty of that). And I think that's why it was smart to reduce the scale for the last hour, reminding us that Pitt's character is a man and a father -- not just a soulless killing machine.

I'm curious to see how this all looks in 3D (before the film, Paramount CEO Brad Grey informed the audience that director Marc Forster is still finishing the 3D conversion), and I'm curious to know what a paying audience will think. But for now, at least, the dark rumors that World War Z would be dead-on-arrival appear to have been greatly exaggerated.

Beyonce And Jay-Z, Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie Top Forbes Power Couple List

Beyonce and Jay-Z and Anglina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been featured in Forbes Magazine's annual World's Most Powerful Couples List.

The list features many dynamic duos from the world of movies, music, fashion, politics and royalty, but despite The Obamas and The Gates taking the first and second spot, Bey and Jay are ranked up there.

Mr and Mrs Carter took third spot with the magazine citing their influence, their earnings and how tight they are with the President and First Lady.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt came in at number 5 thanks to their humanitarian work and the ripple effect caused by Angelina's recent brave decision to undergo double mastectomy surgery.

Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres are the only same-sex couple in the list and new mum Shakira makes the line-up alongside her footballer-boyfriend Gerard Pique.

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen are also featured while Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip took the last coveted spot.

Source: Paramount Pictures
May 23, 2013

Paramount Pictures has debuted a new poster for Marc Forster's World War Z, offering a variant of the design revealed last month. Check it out below with the earlier version beneath for comparison.

Based on Max Brooks' best-selling novel "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War," the story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.

Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Matthew Fox and David Morse also star in the June 21 release.

Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need."

In the movie "Fight Club," that's one of the many memorable lines uttered by Brad Pitt's insane character Tyler Durden. And it couldn't be more ironic given the actor's love of promoting products in real life. Pitt is one of the most sought-after -- and willing -- Hollywood stars to do product endorsements. He's appeared in ads for Pringles, Honda, Heineken and Rolex, and is a regular in commercials in Japan and China. In the latter market he's currently a spokesman for Cadillac
Sadly, his TV spots these days are veering towards the off-putting and bizarre, if that recent Chanel ad he did is any evidence. Yikes!

But make no mistake, back in the day, he was great.

Pitt's best commercial work is the above 1991 Levi's ad -- which aired 25 years after the first-ever TV commercial for Levi's jeans hit the small screen. The company this week celebrates its 140th birthday of the trademarking of the blue jean, which is considered the anniversary of the Levi's company. Founder Levi Strauss died years ago in his 70s, but his descendants still run the company today.

But back to Pitt.

In the ad, he portrays a prisoner in a desert jail. Years before his six kids and the 'Brangelina' phenomenon, we see a young, mussed-up-hair Pitt escorted out of the jail after he's found to be "inocente". As one last 'F-U' to his prisoner, the warden decides to try steal Pitt's clothes to send off the hunk in an embarrassing fashion. The warden laughs till he realizes the joke's on him.

A super sexy lady comes to fetch Pitt. She brings along his favorite jeans, chucks them over and he slips them on. The fit couldn't be better -- they're Levi's, after all. The pair make out while the warden
gapes. And then they drive off into the distance.

The style of the spot feels signature for the era, with all the steaminess of the most popular videos of the early 90s, oversexed odes to hot models, like George Michael's "Freedom 90" or Chris Issak's "Wicked Game."

It's pretty entertaining all told. And a heck of a lot better than that Chanel ad.

Brad Pitt Screens World War Z To Select Crowds, Scores Positive Reviews

Author: Sean O'Connell | published: 2013-05-24 09:16:21 0 Comments

A public, but still limited, event held in New Jersey Wednesday night continued Paramount’s push to introduce Marc Forster’s World War Z to audiences. None other than Brad Pitt attended a public sneak of the anticipated zombie thriller, which several media members attended … weighing in on the film’s impact below.

“We gotta do a screening for the fans. So, we decided there was no better place to do that than Jersey,” Pitt exclaimed to a packed theater, according to ScreenCrush, which was in attendance. The site went on to describe the film as a “crowd-pleaser,” saying, “If you’ve heard any of the production problems the film has had, don’t believe the hype: World War Z isn’t a disaster. But as a disaster movie, it’s actually pretty good.”

Huffington Post editor Mike Hogan, who attended a smaller, celebrity-filled screening at MoMA in New York City weighed in with his own opinion, stating, “I think it works, though I suspect some people who see the movie cold will wonder why its scale contracted instead of expanding. … I'm curious to know what a paying audience will think. But for now, at least, the dark rumors that World War Z would be dead-on-arrival appear to have been greatly exaggerated.”

Both reports are referencing a steady stream of disastrous production stories of a ballooning budget, costly reshoots, an ending that didn’t work, and so on. All of this led those tracking the production to believe that Z would be more trouble for Paramount than it was worth.

Yet as Forbes points out, all of this negative buzz tends to matter to inside-baseball trackers, but has little impact on the box office.

The countless millions of moviegoers who decide the box office fate of World War Z either don’t know about the film’s tumultuous production or don’t care. Oh, the reports of alleged disagreements between Brad Pitt and director Marc Forster may make juicy gossip, but not one single ticket-buyer who is otherwise interested in a large-scale zombie adventure starring Brad Pitt is going to refrain from buying a ticket because the star and the director might not have always get along.”

Too true. If Z is good – and we hope it is – audiences will flock, interested to see the finished product, caring little about what went into making the movie before it reached your local screen.

Whole Foods selling wine Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt French estate wine
By Heather McPherson, Food Editor

12:01 p.m. EDT, May 24, 2013
All Whole Foods Market stores in Florida are selling the Miraval Rosé wine that was produced in 2012 at the southern French estate of Chateau Miraval, which is owned by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Miraval Rosé is available for a limited time and in limited quantities. The wine is the first Miraval vintage wine from the couple and was created in a collaboration with the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel.

The wine went on sale earlier this year in France, and the first 6,000 bottles reportedly sold out within five hours. Whole Foods Market is selling the wine for $24.99 per bottle (750 ml) while supplies last. All 19 stores in the Florida region will sell Miraval Rosé.

First "World War Z" Reviews are Surprisingly Very Positive

Read more: http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=28463#ixzz2UGGYlArM

There many celebrities and movie critics at last night's surprise screening of "World War Z," for which Brad Pitt was in attendance. This gave people a chance to find out just how terrible the film turned out after all the arguments, re-shoots, and major script changes that took place during production.

The first Twitter reactions are now up and it appears that "World War Z" is not a terrible movie. In fact, it's a fantastic movie that may just be one of the most entertaining movies of 2013.

Check out some reviews below and watch the movie in theaters on June 21st.

Jimmy Fallon: Just saw World War Z. So much better than World War A-Y.

* IGN: World War Z: a big, solid zombie movie. Makes up for in scope what it lacks in blood.

* ScreenCrush: So after all that fuss, 'World War Z' turned out to be a surprisingly effective zombie thriller.

* Kevin Bacon: Just got a chance to see World War Z. It's so cool. I love Zombies !!!!!!!!!

* Deborah Norville: Just saw World War Z. Kudos to Brad Pitt. Great movie and am NOT a zombie fan - totally enjoyed it and needed drink afterward!

* LatinoReview: World War Z will probably be the most intense movie you will see this summer... I was shocked it was that good.

* Charles Soule: Was World War Z exactly like the book? No, but I felt it captured much of the flavor, and man, does it have some intense sequences.

* Simon PS: Great movie. World War Z breathes new life into zombies!

* Katie Couric: With Morgan F at the World War Z screening. Love him and really liked the movie when my eyes weren't covered!

* Ivanka Trump: Saw World War Z tonight. Zombie movies definitely do not top of my list of preferred genres but it was awesome!

* Kurt Andersen: Saw World War Z. Not at all the disaster it's been made out to be. It's entertaining and will do fine.

* Emma Heming-Willis: World War Z is unreal. A great film. Was totally stressed out from start to finish.
